Ever looked at a photo and felt like you were looking at a painting instead?
That's Intentional Camera Movement. No compositing, no layering in post, just a single frame, shot in-camera, moved with purpose.
Twenty-five years behind a camera taught me precision. ICM taught me to let go.
New blog post is up, how it works, why I shoot this way, and where in NZ it comes alive. Link in comments 👇

Fresh off the press.
This one's printing on Ilford archival paper right now, the same process behind every fine art piece I make. No digital manipulation, just the image as it was captured, brought to life on paper built to last generations.
Currently prepping entries for the 2026 NZIPP Iris Awards, results due in August. Fingers crossed 🤞
The fine art collection is always open, prints available unframed or framed, ready to hang.

Two versions. One view. Which one's coming home with you?
Mt Erin at dawn. That tower has stood up there through every season, every storm, every sunrise. I've driven past it a thousand times. Finally stopped.
"First Light, Mt Erin" is dropping this week as a fine art archival print, but I want to know which version you'd hang on your wall. Colour or black and white?
❤️ for colour. 👍 for black and white. ... See MoreSee Less

Colour 😁
The tones are beautiful in the colour, but the black and white is really striking, think I would have to lean that way ❤️ no wrong answer they are both gorgeous

I'd have colour in my lounge and B&W in my bathroom as it is very relaxing. Gorgeous shot!

The paper matters just as much as the image.
I print exclusively on Ilford paper. Archival-rated for over 100 years. Museum-grade. The kind of quality you feel before you even look at the image.
Because a print should last. Not just for now — for generations.
Every piece from michellefey.com is printed to order on Ilford fine art paper. Made fresh. Made to last. Made for your walls. Ilford Imaging...

Before the landscapes, there were crime scenes.
I spent years as a forensic photographer with the NZ Police. Nine of us, covering Auckland. If you can imagine it, I likely photographed it.
It was the most demanding photographic education I could have received - and I didn't know it at the time.
Film, not digital. One chance, every single time, to capture everything. No checking the back of the camera. You just had to know.
That training never leaves you.
The subjects are different now. The stillness is different. But the eye is the same eye.

Echoes of the Falls @ Hastings Arts Centre
Something exciting is happening right here in Hastings.
Echoes of the Falls is part of the 2026 Hawke’s Bay Arts Trail Preview Exhibition at the Hastings Arts Centre, and if you haven’t seen it in person yet, now’s your chance.
Ghostly figures rising from the mist. The raw force of Milford Sound transformed into something entirely ethereal. How many figures can you find?
🗓️ On show 2–13 June

Not sure what size print to choose for your wall? You're in good company.
It's the question I get asked more than any other. And honestly - getting the size wrong is the most common art-buying mistake people make. Too small and it gets lost. Too big and it overwhelms the room.
I've put together a practical guide to help you figure it out - how to measure your wall, what size works where, and how to trust your instincts when the numbers feel confusing.
Echoes of Dusk - Lake Wanaka captured at dusk using Intentional Camera Movement, shown here in three sizes above a sofa. Same image. Same room. See how differently each one feels?

Some mornings you just have to get up before the world does.
The sky was doing that thing - where the colours are almost too good to be real. Deep blue bleeding into pink, orange burning at the horizon. And the viewing platform just standing there, perfectly still, perfectly placed.
This is what happens when you chase the dawn. What's the last thing that got you out of bed early?
📍 Hawke's Bay | Shot in-camera, no edits - just the real thing.
